Liver Failure:

Can it ruin your health?

As liver is the largest organ of our body and it performs most of the digestive functions and hence any harm to it can cause a severe damage to the entire body. It is seen that Liver failure can result from any type of liver disorder, including viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver damage from alcohol or drugs. The worst part of this problem is that when the liver failure begins a large portion of the liver must be damaged and it is not very easy to detect. The time for liver failure is not decided as it may develop rapidly over days or weeks that is acute failure or gradually over months or years that leads to a chronic one. There are associated health disorders due to which there is liver failure like jaundice, a tendency to bruise or bleed, ascites, liver encephalopathy, and generally failing health.

Possible symptoms:

Liver failure can occur when most of the above-mentioned diseases occur but there are other causes associated with this problem also. Some of the basic symptoms are fatigue, weakness, nausea, and a loss of appetite and they occur, as there is a disruption in the digestive system. In cases of acute liver failure it is seen that person may go from being healthy to near death within a few days and if the problem is chronic then there is an over all deterioration of the health that may be very gradual until a dramatic event, such as occurrence of bleeding varices. There are some doctors who suggest Blood tests usually show severely deteriorated liver function.

How to treat the problem?

The urgency of treatment depends on whether the liver failure is acute or chronic, but the principles of treatment are the same and specialists in this field confirm it. There is a heavy restriction on general diet and especially protein as too much protein can cause brain dysfunction; too little can cause weight loss. There is not a control on this problem if it is chronic as liver failure is fatal if it is not treated or if the liver disease is progressive.
