Intake of caffeine, herbal therapies such as ephedra, and other medicinal drugs can affect the heart rate. Cocaine abuse and alcohol withdrawal are other major causes of rapid heart rate. Other heart diseases such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia may cause irregular heartbeats due to salt imbalances and also heart attack. Some heart defects known as congenital heart failure that cannot pump oxygenated blood effectively also affect the heart rate.
