It usually consists of two parts, a chest strap and a wrist receiver. Strapless heart rate monitors are also available. The chest strap consists of electrodes in contact with skin to monitor the electrical changes in the heart. When heart beats it is detected and a radio signal is sent out which the receiver uses to determine the current heart rate. Many advace versions are avilable which have facilities like:

Ability to capture large amounts of data.
Functions to aid with training e.g. high and low range for setting training zones.
Ability to download the captured data onto a computer and then analyze with special software
Steps in using Heart Rate Monitor:
Heart rate that's best for training session. Calculate target heart rate.
Adjust monitor to stick to it. Most monitors can be set to beep when strayed from target heart rate
It will display how long has been spent in target heart rate.
It will display calorie burned.
This will allow tailoring and monitoring sessions.
