Weight loss plateau:

What is it?

Hitting a weight loss plateau is an ordinary experience for most dieters. It can be one of the most uninspiring things to happen during a diet. Initially you start with full strength of mind and see the pounds dropping off over the first few weeks, and then the weight loss slows and may even stop. This phenomenon is called the weight loss plateau. The weight loss plateau occurs because body thinks there is a food shortage and has slowed down your metabolism in order to conserve calories. This usually occurs within about a month of starting of a weight loss diet, and may reoccur from time to time thereafter. What's the way out to the weight loss plateau? Increase your metabolism.
Why does it occur?
It is easy to think that problem lies within you. It may be because your metabolism is slow or you may think it is in your genes. It has worked before, so why isn't it working now? There are plenty of reasons why losing weight gets harder as one comes close to their target weight. You feel very hungry and find it almost impossible to have power over your appetite. Because your metabolic rate slows down you burn fewer calories every day. There are also hormonal changes, such as testosterone level goes down and cortisol production increases. This increases the possibility that you will lose some muscle along with the fat. When this happens, many people find quite understandably, that their inspiration for staying with a diet can die away. Slowly, they begin to move away from the plan. The typical approach to dieting is to take up an all or nothing approach. Let's say that you've been following a diet without any kind of lapse for the last few weeks and your improvement has started to slow down. There are days when you feel exhausted, anxious or just a little irritable. You don't always feel like doing work outs. To make matters worse, you are craving for some of the foods which you have cut out of from your diet. Its human nature to desire for the things you can't have. It may be something sweet like chocolate, or savory like bread. You hold out for days until finally you loose and give in. It might start with a single cookie. But it doesn't stop at one, and you end up eating the entire packet. And that's it. The diet has ended. You've failed again. As often happens with the all or nothing approach, the conclusion result is usually nothing.
Don't get disheartened and keep trying to achieve your target with sincere efforts.
